The Wish Fund is an additional way we support the individuals we serve, outside of funded programming.
Some of the ways our Wish Fund has supported individuals in the past include:
- Visits to friends or family outside of Powell River
- Purchasing medical or communication devices not covered by funding options
- Assisting with educational opportunities related to understanding or advocating for disability-related issues
- Opportunities for families to engage together in activities
Wish Fund Story: A ride to school
When a family in our Youth Outreach program needed unexpected vehicle repairs that were outside their budget, it wasn’t just an inconvenience. Because they live on a rural Powell River street, it meant that their teenager couldn’t attend school.
For this family, whose child needs extra support, the School District 47 bus service was not a suitable option, as school support staff are only funded to help once the student arrives at school. Similarly, the City Transit System wasn’t a viable option as it doesn’t offer daily bus service to their neighbourhood.
With the support of their Youth Outreach worker, the family applied to our Wish Fund. They received the funds they needed to repair their car, enabling the youth to return to school and their after-school activities, including Youth Outreach support.
